RF Face aftercare: do this, avoid this, in the first 72 hours

Right after your RF Face (30m), the most important rule is simple: keep your skin cool and calm. This 30-minute radiofrequency facial is focused on tightening and contouring, and your results look best when you avoid heat, sweat, and irritation while your skin settles. If you’re in Alexandria and trying to fit aftercare into school runs and commutes, I get it. The first 72 hours are the difference between a smooth recovery and that “why is my face still angry?” moment.
0–24 hours after RF Face (30m): cool skin wins
Most people do great after radiofrequency facial aftercare when they treat the first day like a “do less” day. Mild redness, warmth, and a little puffiness can happen. That’s normal. What you don’t want is extra heat on top of it.
Do this today: gentle cleanse, light moisturizer, SPF in the morning, and keep your face out of heat.
What I want you to do
- Wash with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. No scrubs. No brushes.
- Use a fragrance-free moisturizer. If your skin feels warm, keep it simple and light.
- If you’re heading outside, apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+. Even in Alexandria’s cooler fall weather, UV is still UV.
- Drink water and keep your hands off your face. Touching tends to equal irritation.
What to avoid after RF Face today
- Heat: hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, and sitting in a hot car.
- Sweat: strenuous exercise for at least 24–48 hours. If you’re still pink or warm, wait closer to 72.
- Active skincare: retinoids, acids, exfoliants, and anything that stings.
- Alcohol-based products and strong fragrance. These are common triggers for redness.
24–72 hours: when workouts and makeup usually trip people up
This is the window where people feel “fine” and go right back to everything. And then they wonder why their skin looks flushed or reactive. I generally recommend you keep avoiding heat and sweat for 24 to 48 hours, and stretch it to 72 hours if you still feel warm, look pink, or your skin gets easily reactive.
Quick rule for busy schedules: if you wouldn’t put your face over a steaming pot, don’t do the activity yet.
Exercise: when to restart
Light walking is usually fine as long as you’re not overheating. For running, spin, heavy lifting, and anything that gets your face hot, give it at least 24–48 hours. I see a lot of clients in the Franconia and Kingstowne area who love outdoor runs. Keep them easy at first, especially if it’s humid or sunny.
Makeup: keep it minimal at first
If you’re still red or warm, I’d rather you wait. If you need makeup for work, keep it light, skip heavy full-coverage layers, and take it off gently at night. Clean brushes and sponges matter more than you think in this window.
Week 1 after radiofrequency facial: pause the strong stuff
For RF skin tightening care, your goal in week one is steady, calm skin. That means hydration and protection, not “try every active you own.” A lot of my regulars come in for facials near me, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, and peels near me because they want real texture changes. After RF, give your skin a little breathing room first.
Hold for about 7 days: retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, exfoliating pads, scrubs, and professional peels.
Also, avoid picking at dry spots if they show up. That “just one little flake” habit is how people end up irritated. If you notice mild tightness, add more moisture. Don’t add more actives.
Sun is the other big one. Keep SPF on every morning and limit direct exposure, especially while you’re still pink or warm. If you’re driving around Alexandria, remember sunlight through the windshield counts too.
The simple routine that protects your RF Face result
You don’t need a bathroom shelf full of products to support a tighter, more contoured look. You need consistency. When people tell me they’re tired of “snake oil” promises, I’m with them. Keep it basic for a week, then we can build back up if your skin tolerates it well.
AM for the first week
- Gentle cleanser
- Hydrating, fragrance-free moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ (reapply if you’re outside)
PM for the first week
- Gentle cleanse (double cleanse only if you wore makeup, and keep it gentle)
- Moisturizer, and a little extra on areas that feel tight

If something feels off after RF Face, reach out sooner
Normal: mild redness, warmth, and slight swelling that settles down. If you have to be out and about in Springfield, Lorton, Fort Belvoir, Mount Vernon, or Annandale, the timeline is the same. Keep your skin cool, protect it from sun, and don’t push workouts too fast.
Not normal: blistering, intense pain, fever, or swelling that keeps getting worse instead of better. If that happens, call us. I’d rather you check in and have it be nothing than try to push through and end up with unnecessary irritation.

Quick answers: RF Face (30m) aftercare questions I hear every week
How long should I avoid exercise after RF Face (30m)?
Skip strenuous exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours. If your skin still feels warm, looks red, or you flush easily, wait closer to 72 hours. Light walking is usually fine if you’re not overheating.
Can I wear makeup after RF Face (30m)?
If you’re still red or warm, wait. If you need makeup, keep it light, use clean tools, and remove it gently the same day. Avoid heavy, full-coverage layers that can feel occlusive.
When can I go in the sun after RF Face (30m)?
Avoid direct sun while your skin is still pink or warm. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning and reapply if you’re outside. Sun exposure through car windows still counts.
What should I put on my skin immediately after RF Face (30m)?
Stick to a gentle cleanser and a hydrating, fragrance-free moisturizer. Keep it simple. If you’re going outside, add SPF 30+ in the morning.
Is redness or peeling normal after RF Face (30m)?
Mild redness, warmth, and slight swelling can be normal. Peeling is not a common goal of RF skin tightening care, but mild dryness can happen. If you notice blistering, increasing swelling, intense pain, or fever, call us right away.
